Assessment Methodology

Our test is designed to accurately evaluate your vocabulary size and assign a CEFR level (A0 to C2). Here is how it works:

1. Test Structure

The test consists of 100 words dynamically selected based on difficulty: - 40 basic words (A1-A2 levels) - 30 intermediate words (B1-B2 levels) - 30 advanced words (C1-C2 levels) For each word, you must state whether you know it or not.

2. Verification (Control Points)

To ensure accuracy, approximately 30% of the words are chosen as 'control points'. For these words, claiming you know them is not enough; you must select the correct translation from 4 options.

3. Scoring System

Each word has a base weight ranging from 12 (easiest) to 420 (hardest). These weights represent how many similar words they stand for in your overall vocabulary. Your final score is the estimated total number of words you know. Points (words) are awarded as follows:

  • Claimed knowledge: +1x Base Weight
  • Verified knowledge (correct control point): +1x Base Weight
  • Failed verification (incorrect control point): -3x Base Weight penalty

4. Vocabulary Breadth Multiplier

The sum of base points is multiplied by a breadth coefficient ranging from 0.7 to 1.3, based on the share of test words you marked as known. The neutral point (×1.0) is at 70% known words — the empirical center of B1–B2. Below that, your score is dampened (minimum ×0.7); above, it is boosted (up to ×1.3). This rewards broad vocabulary and reduces the impact of lucky guesses on a few familiar cognate words.

5. CEFR Level Mapping

Your estimated vocabulary size (score) determines your CEFR level:

A0Up to 500 words
A1501 - 1,500 words
A21,501 - 3,000 words
B13,001 - 5,000 words
B25,001 - 8,000 words
C18,001 - 12,000 words
C2Over 12,000 words
